Research focus »Interdisciplinary Study of Religions«
»Religion« is the subject not only of theology, but also of other disciplines, especially history, cultural studies, social sciences and philosophy. With its research focus »Interdisciplinary Study of Religions«, the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften connects scholars from different disciplines and national and international institutions and involves them in conversations about the multi-layered relationships of religions in society.
Research group »Religious Dynamics in History and the Present«
In 2019, the research group »Religious Dynamics in History and the Present« was founded at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften to strengthen the multifaceted research on religion at Goethe University. The founding members include Birgit Emich (early modern history), Roland Hardenberg (anthropology), Matthias Lutz-Bachmann (philosophy), Hartmut Leppin (ancient history), Ömer Özsoy (Islamic studies), Thomas M. Schmidt (philosophy of religion) and Christian Wiese (Jewish thought and philosophy).
Research centre »Religious Dynamics« at Goethe University
In the spring of 2021, the research group »Religious Dynamics«, which now includes 16 scholars from eight disciplines, applied for funding through the cluster of excellence initiatives announced by the presidency of Goethe University with their research project »Dynamics of the Religious: Processes of Understanding, Misunderstanding and Communication«. The application was approved in the summer of 2021. The project will receive a total of EUR 3.5 million in funding from Goethe University from 2021 to 2024. The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften is a cooperation partner of the research centre.

Frankfurt-Tel Aviv Center for the Study of Religious and Interreligious Dynamics
In 2022, the Frankfurt-Tel Aviv Center for the Study of Religious and Interreligious Dynamics was founded by the universities in Tel Aviv and Frankfurt am Main. Initiators and founding directors are Christian Wiese and Menachem Fisch, who developed the concept of the new German-Israeli research center in the context of the Forschungskolleg.
Visiting scholars at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften
In cooperation with research projects at the university, such as the Institut für religionsphilosophische Forschung (IRF) and the LOEWE research focus »Religiöse Positionierung«, the Forschungskolleg invites scholars from Germany and abroad to the Kolleg in Bad Homburg for longer research stays. Among others, Yaakov Ariel, Orit Bashkin, Karma Ben Johanan, Ingolf Dalferth, Zafer Duygu, Menachem Fisch, Ketevan Gurchiani, Nader Hammami, Mehmet Akif Koc, Patrick B. Koch, Paul Lichterman, Michael Rosenthal, Abraham Rubin, Yosef Schwartz and Claudia Welz have carried out research at the Kolleg.
Events
The research focus organizes workshops, conferences and public lectures at the Forschungskolleg at irregular intervals.
