»The End of Imperial Russia: Comparisons and Contexts«About the lecture
The lecture will concentrate on the dilemmas facing Russia's rulers in 1856-1917 as they tried to turn a successful pre-modern empire into a viable twentieth-century polity. It will discuss the rival camps within the ruling elite: »liberals« who argued that, to survive, the Romanovs' regime must adopt Western political principles and »authoritarians« who believed that without the police-state Russia's society and empire would disintegrate. Comparisons will be made with other countries on Europe's less developed »Second World« periphery and with other empires. Great attention will be paid to the impact of international relations and geopolitics on Russia's fate.
About the subject of 2017: »End of Empires«
The »Historische Kolleg», the History Programme of the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften, the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities at Goethe University Frankfurt, is dedicating the year 2017 to the study of the »End of Empires« under the directorship of Prof. Dr. C. Cornelißen (Goethe University) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Duve (Max-Planck-Institute for European Legal History/Goethe University).
