Toshiro Terada

Professor of Philosophy, Sophia University Tokyo

Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
September 2023

Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Theory and Practice of Cosmopolitanism in the Contemporary World«

Research partner:
Toshiro Terada is a guest at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften at the invitation of Matthias Lutz-Bachmann, Professor of Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main.

I aim to think philosophically about the significance of cosmopolitanism, particularly in Japanese society. I am also interested in identifying the significance of philosophy in democratic societies that are now suffering from populism.

Scholarly profile of Toshiro Terada

Toshiro Terada has been a professor of philosophy at Sophia University in Tokyo since 2010. Due to his research on German philosophy, especially on the practical philosophy of Immanuel Kant, he has been invited to visit German universities several times - including the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (2007) and the Free University of Berlin (2019). In the academic year 2016/07 he was an exchange professor at Hope College in Michigan.
