Yael Peled

Reseach associate at the Institute for Health and Social Policy, McGill University Montreal

Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
April 2019–July 2019

Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Language as a Complex System: Its Sociocultural Basis and Ethical and Policy Challenges«

Project outline:
As complexity fellow, I draw on my interdisciplinary expertise to examine the moral and political life of language in relation to questions of agency, autonomy and intentionality. My complexity project builds on insights from complexity theory to explore the social, cultural and policy implications of language in a world of complex moral orders, examining the applied ethics of related topics in contemporary debates such as immigration and integration, and their epistemic and (inter)disciplinary foundations. (Yael Peled)

Research partner:
Yael Peled is a guest at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften as a fellow of the research project »Complexity in Science, Culture and Society«. The project is led by Matthias Lutz-Bachmann (Professor of Philosophy at Goethe University) and Harald Schwalbe (Professor of Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Goethe University). It is funded by the Aventis Foundation over a period of three years (2017–2019).

Scholarly profile of Yael Peled

Yael Peled received her DPhil (political theory) from the Department of Politics and International Relations and Nuffield College, the University of Oxford, in 2012 with a thesis entitled »Linguistic Justice and Philosophical Empowerment: Two Justifications for a Plurilingual Theory of Democracy«. Her main research interests centre on the rich and multifaceted interface between moral, political and linguistic agency. She is also interested in the phenomenon of interdisciplinarity in the social sciences and humanities, and in the application of complexity theory (particularly complex adaptive systems) to public policy research. She is currently working as a research associate at the Institute of Health and Social Policy at McGill University Medical School, investigating the complex relationship between language and health, with a special emphasis on mental health from a bioethics perspective.
