Scholarly profile of Norbert Frei


Norbert Frei is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and director of the Jena Center 20th Century History. From 1979 to 2005 he was research assistant at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte in Munich and thereafter, till 2005, he was Professor of Modern and Contermporay History at Bochum University. Frei was a fellow and a guest professor at various institutions, among them the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the Hebrew University Jerusalem. 2010/11 he was Theodor Heuss Professor at The New School for Social Research in New York.
Norbert Frei was a memeber of several historical commissions, among them the independent commission for exploring the history of Bertelsmann and the commssion on the history of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was installed by Joschka Fischer.
