Robert Jubb Leverhulme Early Career Fellow, University College London Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: January - February 2012 Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Tragic Choices: Responding to Injustice« Project outline: I am currently working on a project about how to respond to others’ wrongdoing. When not everyone does as they ought to, we can be faced with a dilemma. Either we risk making ourselves a victim of their injustice by struggling against it or we stand by whilst rights are violated. This dilemma is in a certain sense tragic. Moral loss may be unavoidable since someone must lose something they are entitled to. In negotiating that loss, questions of responsibility for the acts of others and urgency of particular moral demands will be crucial. We need to know when we are complicit in others’ wrongdoing, and what part of the burden putting things right that complicity means we have to bear. For example, how, if at all, are consumers in the developed world responsible for low and often falling standards of labour protection in the developing world? Whilst at the Institute, I will be particularly focusing on questions when we are wrongly involved in others’ failure to live up to morality’s demands.
