»Democratic Vistas« extends its postdoctoral program
With funding from the Foundation on German-American Academic Relations (Stiftung Deutsch-Amerikanische Wissenschaftsbeziehungen – SDAW) and renewed support from private sponsors, the Forschungskolleg‘s research focus »Democratic Vistas« is able to offer three postdoctoral positions for the 2026/2027 academic year.
In 2023, the research focus »Democratic Vistas« began inviting up to three international postdocs annually as fellows to the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften. The fellows contribute to the research focus by working on projects of their own choosing for one year. Central to the »Democratic Vistas« research focus is the concept of »democracy as a way of life,« which the participating scholars approach from the perspective of their respective disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The fellows invited to date specialize in philosophy, political science, art and intellectual history as well as literary and cultural studies.
Starting this year, two of the three fellowships will be awarded as Helga Haftendorn Postdoctoral Fellowships funded by the Foundation on German-American Academic Relations. The foundation was established in 1998 by political scientist Helga Haftendorn, who passed away in 2023. It focuses on the sustainable promotion of young scholars. Haftendorn was director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at the Otto Suhr Institute of Free University of Berlin. She received the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation in 1995 and the German Federal Cross of Merit in 1996 for her research. The postdocs will pursue projects on European and American foreign and security policy, or on the past and present of transatlantic relations.
The third fellowship will be awarded for research that examines democracy from a humanities or cultural studies perspective. It is funded by private sponsors who support the John McCloy Transatlantic Forum at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften.
