»The past and future of migration control in an age of (de-)globalisation« Topic
When the history of migration control took off as a research subject in the 1990s, the mood - at least in my recollection - was one of cautious optimism. After all, more and more zones of relative free migration were established, and access to citizenship became easier in some European countries. Concerns related to invisible controls, particularly after 9/11: databases and other systems of scrutiny, that were both powerful and potentially difficult to challegenge. But what has emerged as an equally powerful trend, some 20 years later, is a system of physical barriers surrounding ›fortress Europe‹, or the ›wall‹ at the southern U.S. border. How did trends change so quickly? And what do they say about readings of the past and projections for the future?
