About the discussion
The global resurgence of renationalization tendencies and the rise of authoritarian regimes are putting pressure on the classic »Atlantic« understanding of international cooperation. Authoritarian regimes such as China are increasingly encountering sympathy and gaining imitators with their criticism of the rule-based multilateral order, which is largely associated with the democracies of the West. In this context, the criticism is additionally fueled by China's supposed successes in the area of pandemic control and by its dynamic growth rates.
The realignment of U.S. foreign policy in the Biden administration in general and plans for a »coalition of democracies« provide the backdrop for a panel discussion that seeks to analyze the medium and long-term implications of current global trends for Atlantic democracies and multilateral cooperation in a global context. .

Research focus »Democratic Vistas: Reflections on the Atlantic World«
The panel discussion is the second public event of the research group »Democratic Vistas. Reflections on the Atlantic World« at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften. The group, which was launched in January 2021 by the Frankfurt professors Johannes Voelz and Gunther Hellmann, addresses the potentials and limits of the Atlantic cooperation with regard to the future of democracy from various perspectives and disciplines.
