»Scandinavian social democracy at the crossroad. What's left of the Left?«
Yohann Aucante is Maïtre de conférences (lecturer) at »Centre d'études sociologiques et politiques Raymond Aron«, EHESS in Paris. He works on the Scandinavian Welfare State. On this topic, he published the book Les démocraties scandinaves. Des systèmes politiques exceptionnels? (Armand Colin, Paris, Collection U, 2013) and, most recently, the essay »Paradoxes of Hegemony: Scandinavian Social Democracy and the State« (in: European Socialists and the State in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries, ed. by Mathieu Fulla and Marc Lazar, Palgrave McMillan, 2020). He is joint Editor-in-Chief of the French interdisciplinary journal of Nordic studies Nordiques (OpenEdition).
About the lecture
The Nordic countries of Europe are often synonymous with social democratic welfare states. The traditional Left had a long-lasting dominance, particularly in Sweden and Norway. These parties have progressively lost ground since the 1980s, encountering similar dilemmas as their counterparts in France, the UK or Germany. They have nevertheless managed to hold slightly better positions in elections and government, with cyclical comebacks that warrants some explanation in light of the evolution of their ideological and sociological profile. Challengers have risen mostly on the right of the political spectrum with divisive issues such as immigration. As of today, social democrats assume executive power in Denmark, Finland and Sweden. Is the current pandemic crisis, with its emphasis on classical welfare, health and social care as well as heavy state intervention a »favourable context« for these parties?

Lecture series: »Perspectives of Social Democracy in Europe«
Throughout Europe, social democratic and democratic socialist parties have suffered dramatic losses of voter support in recent years. At the same time, new political movements, often right-wing populist parties, have been able to win large numbers of votes in many countries. The historical, cultural, social and political causes for this development differ from country to country. Nevertheless, it also grows out of common or similar roots and overarching trends.
A series of lectures at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften will focus on the »Perspectives of Social Democracy in Europe«. The series will analyse and compare the causes that have led to the current situation of social democracy in different countries. It will also examine the question of whether transnational cooperation within the European Union in particular offers social democracy the opportunity to take on a new role and gain strength. Given the current challenges of parliamentary democracy, this question is also of great importance for the other democratic parties and movements in Europe.
