Panel discussion on peace diplomacy in Ukraine
In a debate on July 16, 2024, peace and conflict researcher Nicole Deitelhoff (Peace Research Institute Frankfurt) and Russia expert Margarete Klein (Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik) discussed the topic »Peace Diplomacy for Ukraine: Mission Impossible?«. The political scientist Gunther Hellmann moderated the discussion.
In her analysis of the conflict, Deitelhoff described the conditions that would make negotiations possible and ensure their success. According to Deitelhoff, these are not yet in place, which is why negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are rather unlikely at the moment. It is more likely that the conflict will drag on for a very long time. This perspective was also shared by Klein, who does not see any willingness to compromise on the part of Russia, but rather an intensification of the conflict. The country is continuing to arm itself and is preparing for a long war. Only when both parties to the conflict have reached a stalemate after a process of attrition will there be hope for diplomatic solutions.
You can read more about the prospects for negotiations in the Friedensgutachten 2024.
The event was organized jointly with Hessische Landeszentrale für politische Bildung.
