Wir freuen uns außerordentlich, mitteilen zu können, dass Prof. Menachem Fisch von der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung für seine Forschungsleistungen auf dem Gebiet der Wissenschaftsphilosophie und der talmudischen Studien mit dem prestigereichen Humboldt-Forschungspreis ausgezeichnet worden ist. Prof. Fisch verbringt das akademische Jahr 2016/17 als Gastwissenschaftler an der Martin-Buber-Professur der Goethe-Universität sowie als Fellow am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in Bad Homburg. Die Martin-Buber-Professur und das Forschungskolleg gratulieren Prof. Fisch sehr herzlich und freuen sich auf ein Jahr intensiver Kooperation mit ihm!

Menachem Fisch wurde von Prof. Dr. Christian Wiese für den Preis nominiert. In seiner Laudatio schrieb Wiese:

»Prof. Fisch belongs to the leading intellectual historians and philosophers in the area of modern Wissenschaftsgeschichte, and, at the same time, to the most acknowledged contemporary Jewish philosophers. It is, indeed, this rare and exceptionally creative dialogue between general philosophy and Jewish thought ... that explains his widespread international reputation and constitutes his extraordinary academic achievements. ... The openness, critical scholarship and moral character of Menachem Fisch’s main scholarly endeavor, the establishment of a dialogue between Judaism, Christianity and Islam based on innovative methods as well as on a fundamental respect for the Other’s tradition, provides a model for academic engagement in the interreligious and intercultural encounter between Judaism, Christianity and Islam which are meaningful on a global scale, particularly in view of the conflicts in the Middle East, but also with regard to current debates in Germany about mutual cultural understanding in increasingly multicultural and multireligious immigrant societies. Due to his internationally acknowledged role as a prolific scholar and public intellectual working on philosophical issues of contemporary relevance, Menachem Fisch’s presence in the German academic context will, therefore, be of particular significance.«

Menachem Fisch ist Joseph and Ceil Mazer Professor emeritus of History and Philosophy of Science, Direktor des Center for Religious and Interreligious Studies (CRIS) und der frühere Vorsitzende der Graduate School of Philosophy an der Tel Aviv University. Er ist auch Senior Fellow des Kogod Center for the Renewal of Jewish Thought am Shalom Hartman Institute, Jerusalem.

Zu seinen wichtigsten Publikationen zählen die Monographien: The View from Within: Normativity and the Limits of Self-Criticism, Notre Dame 2011 (mit Y. Die Brill Library of Contemporary Jewish Philosophers (hrsg. von H. Tirosh-Samuelson and A. Hughes) hat Menachem Fisch kürzlich einen Band mit dem Titel The Rationality of Religious Dispute (2016) gewidmet.

Prof. Fisch ist nicht der erste Humboldt-Preisträger an der Martin-Buber-Professur für Jüdische Religionsphilosophie: 2012 war der mit dem Preis ausgezeichnete Historiker Prof. Shmuel Feiner (Bar Ilan University) in Frankfurt zu Gast, und der Frühneuzeitler Prof. David Ruderman (University of Pennsylvania) verbringt von 2016 bis 2019 – auf Einladung von Prof. Dr. Christian Wiese, Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Hollender und Prof. Dr. Rebekka Voss – jeweils mehrere Monate an der Goethe-Universität.
