Leo Steeds Visiting Fellow Aufenthalt am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: Februar–Juli 2025Forschungsthema am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Nature and the Normative Foundations of Economics«Projektbeschreibung: My research project engages with ongoing discussions about the status of nature in social theory through a critical examination of the history of economic thought, with a particular focus on the normative role of appeals to nature in economics. Longstanding debates around the relation between the natural and the social have been renewed in recent years in light of the growing urgency of the environmental crisis. My project explores two interconnected strands. First, it enquires into the epistemological and ethical stakes of contemporary transdisciplinary debates around the relationship between the natural and the social. Second, building on my past research, it examines the foundational role of nature in the seminal work of Adam Smith, tracing how his engagement with nature shaped the early contours of economic thought. Bridging historical analysis and contemporary theoretical concerns, this project seeks to contribute to broader discussions around the relationship between the political and the economic spheres in light of current crises of democracy and environment.
(Leo Steeds) Zusammenarbeit: Leo Steeds ist auf Einladung von Matthias Lutz-Bachmann, Professor für Philosophie an der Goethe-Universität und Direktor des Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften, zu Gast am Kolleg. Wissenschaftliches Profil von Leo SteedsLeo Steeds promovierte 2020 in Politik und internationalen Beziehungen an der Universität Warwick, wo er zuvor, nach einem Musikstudium an der Universität Oxford, einen MA in internationaler politischer Ökonomie erworben hat. Seine Forschung bewegt sich an der Schnittstelle von politischer Theorie, politischer Ökonomie und Umweltphilosophie. Im Rückgriff auf historische und begriffliche Analysen untersucht er, inwiefern die gegenwärtige Umweltkrise das vorherrschende Verständnis des Verhältnisses von Politik und Wirtschaft infrage stellt. Von 2023 bis 2025 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter des Projekts »Adam Smith 300« an der Universität Glasgow. Gegenwärtig arbeitet er als Mitherausgeber an einem Sammelband mit dem Titel New Voices on Adam Smith's Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, der 2026 bei Scottish Universities Press erscheinen wird.Website: Weitere Informationen über Leo Steeds finden Sie hier.
